Note: Surpass Assessment is now the company name for BTL and BTL Surpass.

BTL are delighted to announce that the installation of the Adobe® Flash Player is no longer needed in Surpass.

Since the announcement in 2017 that Adobe® would be ending its support of the Adobe® Flash Player, BTL has been working with the Surpass Community to end the use of Adobe® Flash Player in Surpass. We are delighted to announce that as of the end of 2020, the installation of the Adobe® Flash Player is no longer needed to use Surpass.

In the early days of Surpass, Adobe® Flash Player had been a very useful and widely supported platform ideally suited for providing interactive simulations within exams to test higher-order skills. Due to the end of support announcement by Adobe® in July 2017, BTL immediately committed to removing it from Surpass products. This decision announced in 2017, had the full support of the Surpass Community and in recent years BTL customers now have the option to deliver HTML only exams using the latest version of Surpass.

David Scott, Chief Information Security Officer at BTL, stated:

“Adobe® have handed the support of the Adobe® Flash Player to their trusted partner, HARMAN. HARMAN provide extended support and security updates to enable enterprise customers to continue to use the Flash Player. BTL are committed to ensuring that Surpass is secure, therefore for customers who have not yet been able to transition all of their exams to BTL’s latest version of Surpass, BTL provides the HARMAN version of Flash Player.”

For organisations using test content that was originally designed for the capabilities of the Adobe® Flash Player, the Surpass Viewer application is available. The Surpass Viewer uses a fully supported version of Flash Player, including security updates, licensed from HARMAN, explicitly provided for enterprise customers like BTL. This enables BTL to help its customers through the transition away from Flash without compromising their regulatory requirements to maintain consistency and fairness for candidates during a live running exam programme.

If you have any questions about Flash or transitioning to HTML with Surpass, please contact your account manager who would be more than happy to assist you.
