As we celebrate Surpass’ 40th anniversary, I’m so proud to reflect on our journey from a local Bradford company to a world leader in digital assessment. This milestone is not just about what we’ve achieved but about how we’ve grown with purpose – focusing on giving back and making a meaningful impact on education. Globally, we’ve built a reputation for helping educators and organizations worldwide harness the power of our technology to improve learning outcomes, with unwavering commitment to innovation and trustworthiness. Surpass through history
As a former physics teacher, Dr Bob Gomersall, Founder and Chair of Surpass, has always been passionate about technology and education. He created his first educational software with his brother Bill in the 1970s. Their computerized A Level physics questions, stored on audio cassette tapes, ran on a 4k Commodore PET 2001, one of the very first personal computers.
Founded in 1985, the organization went on to develop products including one of the world’s first comprehensive personalized educational CD-ROMs in the 1990s, before becoming a pioneer of online assessment software in the 2000s.

Today, Surpass Assessment has grown into an award-winning, world-leading provider of assessment software and services, working closely with its customers and the Surpass Community to enable all learners to achieve their full educational potential.
Used by awarding organizations, test publishers, IT companies, educational institutions, and national government bodies across the globe, Surpass lets organizations efficiently create and validate tests for secure delivery across multiple platforms. Many organizations across a range of industries use Surpass’ market-leading end-to-end assessment solutions, including healthcare, finance, legal, language and IT sectors.
